There’s something special about photographing families in the golden light of a Nebraska sunset, and the Shunkwiler family session at UNL East Campus in Lincoln, NE was no exception. Even on one of the hottest, most humid evenings of the summer, this family showed up with warmth, patience, and so much love for one another.

East Campus is one of my favorite spots for family photography in Lincoln. The open fields, tree-lined paths, and golden-hour skies provide a natural backdrop that feels timeless and genuine. On this evening, the light filtered through the trees in the most beautiful way, giving us that soft, glowing look that makes sunset sessions so memorable.

Despite the heat, Mom, Dad, and their son were absolute troopers. They laughed together, took breaks when needed, and leaned into the moment instead of fighting the weather. The result? Images that capture not only their personalities but also the bond that ties them together as a family.

I always encourage families to see sessions not just as “picture day,” but as a chance to slow down and spend time together. That mindset is exactly what made the Shunkwiler family’s photos so natural and heartfelt.

Overall, my advice for family photography sessions is always the same — think of it more as spending time with your family doing an activity that you love, rather than a photo session. When people feel like they can be themselves, this is where the magic happens. When everyone feels comfortable, we easily create those perfectly candid photos.
