There’s something really special about photographing families in their own space. When I arrived at the McDaniel home in Lincoln, Nebraska, I could already tell it was going to be a fun afternoon. The kids were buzzing with energy, and the house had that warm, lived-in feeling that makes lifestyle family photos so meaningful.

We started off slow, all piled up on the bed together. The kids snuggled in, laughed, and wiggled around, and before long those natural smiles started showing up. That’s what I love about in-home sessions—kids don’t feel the pressure of being “on” for the camera. They’re just themselves, and that’s exactly what makes the photos so authentic.

After some cozy shots indoors, the real adventure began outside in the backyard. The McDaniels have a play set, and the kids wasted no time racing toward it. Swings, slides, and backyard tag—every moment was pure energy and joy. I chased after them with my camera, catching the kind of candid laughter you can’t plan or pose.

By the end of the afternoon, we had a mix of everything: the quiet moments of closeness inside, and the wild, carefree play outside. Looking back, it felt less like a photoshoot and more like an afternoon spent with friends—documenting the little things that make this family who they are right now.

That’s why I love being a family photographer in Lincoln. Every home, every backyard, every ordinary corner of life holds stories worth remembering. And for the McDaniel family, those stories are now frozen in time—bedtime snuggles, backyard adventures, and all the laughter in between.

Overall, my advice for family photography sessions is always the same — think of it more as spending time with your family doing an activity that you love, rather than a photo session. When people feel like they can be themselves, this is where the magic happens. When everyone feels comfortable, we easily create those perfectly candid photos.
