Some of my favorite sessions happen in the places that don’t try too hard — where there’s room to run, nothing’s overly polished, and the moments come easy. That was exactly the case with the Klayum family in Roca, Nebraska.
Roca is one of those small towns where time seems to slow down. It’s quiet in the best way, with wide open skies and just enough grit to give everything a little character. We wandered around town together — chasing light, following the kids’ lead, and pausing wherever the moment felt right.
The Klayums brought such a calm energy to the session. They were up for anything, and more importantly, they weren’t in a rush. That unhurried pace meant we could focus on what matters most: their connection. From quiet portraits to playful, in-between moments, it all just unfolded naturally.
The evening ended with a Nebraska sunset that couldn’t have been better if we’d planned it. Warm light, a little breeze, and a family soaking it all in together.

Sessions like this are a reminder that you don’t need a perfect backdrop or matching outfits to tell a beautiful story. You just need a place that feels familiar, and people who are willing to be present with each other.

Overall, my advice for family photography sessions is always the same — think of it more as spending time with your family doing an activity that you love, rather than a photo session. When people feel like they can be themselves, this is where the magic happens. When everyone feels comfortable, we easily create those perfectly candid photos. We all want photos that capture the personality of the people we love most and that is always my goal for your session.
